Its been a little while since my last post however I am happy to confirm that the porteous.org web site is back on line.
A little while ago I commissioned an engineer to overhaul the hardware that is used to host this web site including the development of a reliable backup solution....
I had a good plan but the plan fell over when the engineer left the company he was working for.
As you can see the porteous.org web site is back with a slightly different look and feel.

I am seeking information on a John Porteous who was married to Mary Moffatt. He was presumably born in Scotland.
He had a son, also John Porteous, b. 18 March 1853 in Glasgow, Scotland, d. 27 Oct 1901 in Florence, Alabama.
Scientists have linked global warming and human evolution together. There is now indisputable proof of the link as shown in this rare image.
One of the things my Dad shared with me was how to start a "Ginger Beer Plant". This recipe is very easy to follow and has been made many times with great success.
Recently I found a copy of the recipe and thought it would be worth publishing online.
If you like commercial Ginger Beer, then you'll love this brew...
The Crook Inn is the Oldest Licenced Coaching Inn in Scotland.
The Inn is full of fascinating period features such as an early 17th century bar, and has many art deco features that are unique in this part of Scotland.
This is now under threat because the increase in house prices makes it more attractive for the current owner to close the pub and turn it into flats.
Based on your feedback, we have added a couple of new features to porteous.org, the most significant being a threaded discussion forum.
A forum is an online discussion group, where registered participants with common interests can exchange open messages, post ideas, suggestions, questions and answers.
The forum can also be searched so in time as the community grows so will is value to genealogy researches.
I have been keeping my ear to the ground and have received a suggestion to add "Family Number" to the user database. Fortunately the CMS we are using allows us to create custom fields that suit this feature.
The Family Number illustrates how porteous family groups are distributed throughout the globe.
I have just returned to Australia from a business trip to Beijing and Shanghai in the Peoples Republic of China.
My flight to China was with Australia's Qantas airlines, one the world's safest airlines.
While on the flight I took advantage of the in flight entertainment and watch a movie called An Inconvenient Truth starring former US vice president Al Gore.
The movie is a MUST WATCH if you are concerned about the climate crisis we face globally.
The movie has a slight US perspective but the message is global.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch this movie... even if some of the facts are only half true, then YOU! should be concerned...
I've received a few emails asking I could host a online genealogy database, while I'm happy to add the feature, i would need your help to load the data.
After a quick google search, I have found a few web based applications that are feature rich and simple to use.
If you are interested in helping develop an online (secure) genealogy database, then drop me a line.
Based on your interest and support, I'll invest the money in extra software. Let me know your thoughts..
