Save the Crook Inn!

28Nov2006

The Crook Inn is the Oldest Licenced Coaching Inn in Scotland.

The Inn is full of fascinating period features such as an early 17th century bar, and has many art deco features that are unique in this part of Scotland.

This is now under threat because the increase in house prices makes it more attractive for the current owner to close the pub and turn it into flats.

Hello Folks

I had a phone call in the last few days from Christine Parker of Polmood Tweedsmuir regarding the closure of the Crook Inn; this has came as great surprise to me. The Crook Inn changed hands in May this year when Susan & Gordon Bel had an offer they could not refuse from a chap named James Doonan. When I heard that it had changed hands I went down to the Crook and spoke to the new proprietor about the Porteous Associates and the Porteous Wall and everything seemed to be in order as we found out when myself, Wilma, Ken & family got together on the 9th September for my Annual Dinner with Robbie Scott. Although Robbie could not attend this year due to family illness everything was well at the Crook so you can imagine my surprise when I got the phone call this week from Christine telling me that they had closed the Crook down and had applied for planning permission to turn it into flats (apartments).

What I would like to do is get as many of the Porteous Associates to respond by going on to this Web Site www.savethecrook.org.uk and express their protest against the closure.

This is not only because of the Porteous Associates connections for the last 17 years as a group but because of the Historical fact that the Porteous Family have used this hostelry since the late 1500's.

If you keep checking this Web Site it will update you on the situation.
Hopefully we can stop this going ahead.

Yours aye Tam
